The Whitstable Atlantic 85 lifeboat Lewiso was launched at 5.49 on Tuesday evening, 10 May, following a report of a paddleboarder in difficulties off Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey.

The lifeboat arrived ‘on scene’ and the crew found a man with a young child attempting to reach the beach against the south westerly force 4 wind a 1/4-mile offshore.

Both were bought onboard the lifeboat and landed ashore at Leysdown where a family member was waiting. They were unharmed.

Vulnerable

Whitstable Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Judge said “The incident is a timely reminder of how vulnerable paddleboards are to a offshore wind.

“We would urge people to assess the direction and strength of the wind as close inshore the wind will be seen to be much less than further out.”
