A police check of a car parked on double yellow lines has led to a prolific Herne Bay thief being jailed for over a year.

Naomi Denton-Younger was one of the occupants in the vehicle when it was spotted by officers on Wednesday 11 January. Although she initially provided officers with a false name, the local officer recognised her as the suspect for a number of recent shopliftings and she was arrested.

On Boxing Day afternoon last year, Denton-Younger had stolen 53 chocolate bars worth £105 from the Co-op in Mortimer Street.

The following day around 7pm she took three bottles of whisky worth over £100 and ran out of the Tesco store in Sea Street without paying for them.

At 8pm on 3 January 2023 the 31-year-old entered Morrisons in Beach Street and put two joints of beef worth £36 into a bag before leaving the store.

Finally at around 9.45pm on 4 January Denton-Younger returned to the Tesco store in Sea Street and hid seven packs of fresh salmon in her jacket and left without paying again.

However she was identified as the suspect for all four thefts via CCTV footage.

Denton-Younger, from Herne Bay, was charged with four counts of shoplifting, resisting arrest and refusing to provide a sample for class A drug testing.

She admitted the offences at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 12 January 2023 where she was sentenced to a 54-week custodial sentence.

Investigating officer PC David Cross said: ‘Naomi Denton-Younger is a prolific shoplifter in the Herne Bay area and such behaviour often has a detrimental effect on local businesses and the wider community.


‘The officers who worked on this case were determined to bring her before the courts and we are pleased she has been given a custodial sentence and can no longer continue her criminal behaviour.’
