A school in Canterbury has been chosen to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’ to help Her Majesty The Queen celebrate 70 years on the throne.

Parkside Community Primary School is one of only 70 schools in the United Kingdom selected to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Along with 68 of the other primary schools, Parkside Community Primary School will be gifted a tree – a Pyrus C Chanticleer – to be planted in the school grounds during a special tree planting ceremony. The 70th school, Crathie Primary School in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, helped launch the QGC initiative on Friday, October 1 when pupils planted their school’s tree in the grounds of Balmoral Castle – the Royal Family’s Scottish holiday home – with a little help from Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

The other 69 schools will plant their trees over the coming weeks during ceremonies led by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenants – the Lord-Lieutenant of Kent is The Lady Colgrain.

Executive head teacher at Parkside Community Primary School, James Williams, said: “Parkside Community Primary School feels very honoured to have been selected to be part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project and we are all looking forward to the planting ceremony on Friday, October 15.

“The tree will be a welcome addition to our wonderful grounds and will become part of the school’s established woodland area that supports the children’s learning.”

Parkside Community Primary School’s tree planting ceremony will take place on the morning of Friday, October 15. Pupils, staff, and The Lady Colgrain will be joined by representatives from Kent County Council, members of the local community and the school community, along with members of the media and other guests.

In addition to schools, the QGC initiative encourages individuals, communities and groups, counties and cities, and businesses to plant a tree for the jubilee. More details of how to get involved can be found on the Queen’s Green Canopy website.
