A major investigation is underway after a suspicious fire completely destroyed two caravans in Ramsgate, triggering severe travel disruption.
Emergency services rushed to Royal Harbour Approach at approximately 03:10 on Thursday 18 June 2026, following urgent reports that multiple vehicles had been engulfed by flames. Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed three fire engines to the scene, where crews faced a fierce, developed blaze.
Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus battled the flames for over an hour and a half, utilizing high-pressure hose reel jets, main jets, and light portable water pumps to finally bring the incident under control. The scene was officially cleared by 04:44.
Miraculously, officials have confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. However, the nature of the blaze has raised serious alarms.
Officers from Kent Police also attended the scene and are treating the cause of the fire as suspicious. An arson investigation has been launched to determine exactly how the fire started. The ongoing police operation and recovery efforts have led to the complete closure of the A299 Royal Harbour Approach and the Ramsgate Tunnel in both directions, with high-severity traffic delays expected to impact drivers throughout the day.
