GILLINGHAM – A Dagenham couple has admitted to a prolific shoplifting campaign that spanned across South England following a targeted investigation by Kent Police. Mariana Ghencea, 40, and Robert-Florin Ghencea, 28, appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 4, where they pleaded guilty to 26 counts of theft.

The investigation began after the pair targeted a Tesco store on Courteney Road in Gillingham on March 21, 2026. Kent Police officers initially linked the duo to six additional incidents in Sevenoaks, Whitstable, and Folkestone. However, by collaborating with Tesco’s head office and security teams, investigators uncovered a much broader series of 26 thefts occurring between February 19 and April 3.

The shoplifting spree focused on high-value pantry staples, including Filippo Berio olive oil, Lavazza coffee beans, and Lurpak butter. Individual thefts ranged from £59 to £535, culminating in a total estimated loss of £4,630 for the supermarket chain.

The pursuit of the suspects led officers to Dagenham on Friday, May 1. During the raid on their residence, Robert-Florin attempted to evade capture by hiding in a garden shed, but both were successfully apprehended.

Investigating officer Police Sergeant Sophie Lawrie said:

‘The Ghenceas have caused havoc to businesses across south England and we are satisfied they admitted to having done so. They have caused a nuisance for numerous security guards who have had to confront them during their offending, as well as taking thousands of pounds worth of items.

‘Our officers acted quickly and drove to Dagenham to arrest them, which should act as a warning to others not to come into our county and offend. We will come and find you wherever you are.’
