Folkestone & Hythe District Council has announced it will contribute £236,000 to support the essential repairs needed to reopen the Road of Remembrance. This critical link between The Leas and the harbour has remained closed to both vehicles and pedestrians following a series of landslips in January 2024.

Kent County Council has finalized a comprehensive technical design to stabilize the cliffside and ensure the road can safely return to use. The total cost of the stabilization project is estimated at approximately £5million. Despite the road not falling under its direct jurisdiction, the district council offered the financial support in recognition of the route’s immense local significance, and the contribution has been officially accepted.

Cllr Polly Blakemore, Cabinet Member for Transport, Regulatory Services and Building Control said:

“While the responsibility has never been this council’s, we have assisted with the reopening of the Road of Remembrance wherever we can. That includes the clearance of vegetation and reduction of tree heights on land in F&HDC ownership to prevent further land slips. We’re pleased work to reopen the Road of Remembrance is finally on the horizon and to contribute funding to help make this happen.”
