In a bid to curb antisocial behaviour, Ashford Police conducted high-visibility patrols across the town on Friday, resulting in the seizure of seven e-scooters, a catapult, and a stash of cannabis.
Officers focused their attention on areas known for potential trouble spots, including the town centre, Stanhope, Beaver Green, and Kennington. During these patrols, individuals acting suspiciously or riding e-scooters were stopped and questioned about their conduct.
E-scooter Seizure Spree
A significant number of e-scooters were taken off the streets, with riders issued with Section 59 notices under the Police Reform Act. This legislation empowers officers to seize vehicles deemed to be causing a nuisance or alarm to the public.
Catapult and Cannabis Confiscated
In a separate incident, a pedestrian was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery and seizure of a catapult. Furthermore, an individual riding an e-scooter was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis. This individual was dealt with through a community resolution.
This operation underscores the Ashford Police’s commitment to maintaining public safety and order within the community. By proactively addressing concerns and taking decisive action against antisocial behavior, they aim to create a more peaceful and enjoyable environment for all residents.
Inspector Jason Bushell, of Ashford Community Safety Unit, said:
‘It is currently against the law to use e-scooters on public streets, pavements or cycle lanes.
‘They are only permitted on private land, with the landowner’s permission, and in parts of the country where the Government has permitted trials.
‘Beat officers regularly stop and speak to people they see using e-scooters, seeking to educate them about the law surrounding their use.
‘When people are seen riding e-scooters in an anti-social manner, we can issue Fixed Penalty Notices and seize and destroy the machines.’
