Kent Police’s incredible Volunteer Cadet program just received the ultimate gold star: The King’s Award for Voluntary Service! This prestigious award recognizes the program’s outstanding work and the positive impact it has on communities.
Since 2015, the program has empowered young people (aged 11-18) to become active citizens. Cadets get involved in real-world activities like helping at local events, offering crime prevention tips, and even advising the police on youth issues. They also learn valuable skills like teamwork, decision-making, and responsible citizenship, all while making lifelong friends.
Kent’s Chief Constable Tim Smith is bursting with pride:
“Our cadets are like family, supporting both officers and communities. This award is a testament to their dedication and the amazing cadet leaders who guide them.”
The program boasts over 434 enthusiastic cadets and 120 dedicated leaders who meet weekly. It even offers Junior and Mini cadet programs for younger aspiring officers (aged 8 and above). On top of community service, cadets can earn qualifications like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and participate in epic adventures like battlefield tours and mountain climbs!
While the program doesn’t guarantee a future police badge, it gives valuable insights into law enforcement and equips cadets with skills that make them stand out in any career path they choose. Many former cadets are now proud police officers, Special Constables, or valued members of the Kent Police staff.
This award is a double win for Kent Police! They’re the only organization in the UK to receive both The King’s Award for Voluntary Service and The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (awarded to the Kent Special Constabulary in 2014).
Director of Citizens in Policing, Gavin McKinnon OBE, emphasizes the program’s focus on building well-rounded individuals:
“We’re not just training future police officers; we’re helping young people reach their full potential, no matter their career choice.”
This award is a well-deserved recognition for the incredible work of cadets, leaders, and everyone behind the scenes. It’s a shining example of how young people can make a real difference in their communities.
