Detectives have tracked down suspects in connection with a distraction burglary near Rochester after rogue callers posing as builders stole power tools from a local home.
The incident occurred on Monday 27 July when two men called unannounced at a property on the Isle of Grain. The callers claimed a roof tile was loose and asked if they could inspect the house. Shortly after the men departed, the occupant discovered that four boxes of power tools were missing and immediately notified the authorities.
Following an investigation, police officers arrested two suspects on Tuesday 4 August and seized a quantity of tools. A 26-year-old man has since been charged with burglary and remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Maidstone Crown Court on 1 September. A 48-year-old man has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
Investigating officers have urged homeowners to remain vigilant when dealing with unexpected callers offering unsolicited repairs or maintenance work. Residents are advised never to feel pressured into agreeing to work on the spot, to always demand a written quote, and to consult family or reputable local traders before proceeding. Occupants should never leave unexpected visitors unattended inside their property and are reminded to dial 999 immediately if a caller refuses to leave.
