A quiet Saturday, 1 August, descended into chaos as a fierce wildfire erupted near Longfield, triggering an urgent emergency response.
Firefighters rushed to Hartley Bottom Road at 2:50pm after frantic calls warned of flames tearing through dry ground.
A total of six fire engines alongside specialist off-road units raced to the scene. To tackle the rapidly spreading blaze, Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed an All-Terrain Vehicle to penetrate hard-to-reach areas, a Bulk Water Carrier to ensure a non-stop supply of water, and heavy-duty equipment including high-pressure hose reel jets, main jets, and specialised beaters.
Supported by Kent Police, who helped secure the surrounding area, firecrew members fought tirelessly for over five hours in intense heat to bring the inferno under control. It was thanks to the swift and aggressive action of the crews, the fire was officially declared extinguished at 8:15pm. Firefighters later revisited the scorched site throughout the evening to douse lingering hotspots and prevent dangerous reignitions.
