Firefighters have spent more than two hours tackling a rapid grass fire in Dunkirk, near Faversham, after tinder-dry ground set the scene for a dramatic emergency response.

Emergency services were alerted just before midday on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, when flames broke out in the London Road area of the Swale district. Six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and two specialist utility terrain vehicles were immediately dispatched to the scene by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Crews faced a challenging task containing the blaze on the parched ground with firefighters deploying high-pressure hose reel jets, specialized fog spikes, and beaters to surround the area and successfully extinguishing the flames shortly after 14:00. Fortunately, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently ongoing.

The incident comes amidst an extended spell of hot, dry weather across the region. Fire authorities warn that bone-dry grass, crops, and woodland across the county remain exceptionally vulnerable, leaving the landscape highly susceptible to fast-spreading fires. Members of the public are being urged to take extreme care outdoors to prevent further outbreaks.
