HAYTOR, DEVON — It’s reported today 13 July 2026, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has formally assumed leadership of the murder investigation following the death of former politician and MP for Maidstone and Maidstone and the Weald, Ann Widdecombe.
Emergency services were initially called to her home in Haytor at approximately 11:40 AM on Thursday, July 9, where the 78-year-old was found deceased with serious injuries.
Following the initial response, a 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was taken into custody on Saturday, July 11, on suspicion of murder. However, as new evidence emerged during this dynamic and complex investigation CTPSE stepped in to take the lead. The suspect has since been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Specialist officers from across the national Counter Terrorism Policing network are now working alongside the Devon and Cornwall Police Major Crime Investigation Team to establish the full circumstances and motive behind the attack.
