An Amber Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Kent and across the South East for the week commencing 22 June when a period of dangerously high temperatures will impact the region, with the heat expected to peak on Tuesday 23 June and Wednesday 24 June, reaching up to 36°C to 37°C in some areas.
Take Action: Stay out of the direct sun between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, close curtains on sun-facing windows, check on vulnerable neighbours, and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Overnight temperatures will also remain exceptionally warm, failing to drop below 20°C.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber health alert due to the high risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable individuals, the elderly, and young children. If you are visiting the Kent coast or inland waterways to cool off, be aware of the risk of cold-water shock, as open water remains cold enough to trigger an immediate physical reaction.
Travel disruption is likely on both road and rail networks due to infrastructure overheating, so it is advised to carry plenty of water and avoid driving during the hottest midday hours. High demand may also strain local water supplies.
