Tunbridge Wells Pensioner, 80, Jailed for 24 Years After Decades of Child Abuse

An 80-year-old man from Tunbridge Wells has been handed a 24-year sentence for a series of predatory sexual offences spanning nearly thirty years.

Michael Merron, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday, 30 April 2026, following a grueling four-week trial. A jury found the octogenarian guilty of multiple charges, including rape, indecent assault, and the sexual assault of a child under 13.

The court heard that the majority of Merron’s crimes took place between 2002 and 2014, involving three children. However, the investigation uncovered a fourth victim who came forward to reveal an assault dating back to the mid-1980s. Detective Constable Alice Comben described Merron as a predatory opportunist who deliberately isolated his victims to maintain control.

Due to the severity and historical nature of the abuse, the court imposed a significant term that ensures the pensioner will spend the vast majority of his remaining years incarcerated. His total sentence of 24 years consists of 23 years in custody and one year on licence. In addition to his prison term, Merron has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Alice Comben said:

‘Merron was a predatory opportunist who carried out his offending when he was alone with each victim, ensuring they felt isolated and he felt in control.

‘I want to commend the bravery of each victim. Their courage to disclose his offending has ensured his criminality has been exposed, and he will now spend a significant time behind bars.

‘Anyone who is a victim of sexual abuse, or wishes to report a suspected offender, can do so in the knowledge that specialist officers will thoroughly and diligently investigate any allegations.’
