Dozens Stopped as Kent Police Use HGV Cab to Stop Dangerous Drivers

KENT, UK – A three-day proactive crackdown on road safety led to dozens of stops and multiple arrests across Kent’s major motorways and A-roads last week.

Between April 22 and April 24, 2026, Kent Police’s Road Safety Unit partnered with National Highways for a targeted enforcement operation. To gain a tactical advantage, officers utilized a specialist HGV cab, providing a high-angle viewpoint to record offences that are often invisible from standard patrol cars.

The patrol covered high-traffic routes including the M20, M26, and A21. During the initiative, officers intercepted 14 lorries, 18 private cars, and two passenger coaches. One van driver, initially spotted using a mobile phone, failed a roadside drug test and was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. Additionally, 18 other motorists were caught using handheld devices, and one driver was detained on an outstanding court warrant for prior traffic offences.

The operation resulted in significant legal action to penalize high-risk motorists and improve county road safety.

Other recorded offences included driving without insurance, seatbelt violations, and the illegal use of the hard shoulder. Officers confirmed that while many drivers faced fines and seizures, educational advice was provided to motorists where appropriate.

Chief Inspector Craig West, Head of Roads Policing said:

‘Drivers who break the law are knowingly putting other motorists at risk and our main priority is to ensure the public are kept safe.

‘Proactive operations are important and show the public that we do not just respond to reports, but seek to find and deal with those who break the law when behind the wheel.

‘We are committed to protecting road users and pedestrians and will continue to take action against motorists who do not pay due care and attention when driving and deliberately break the law.’
