166 Loose Jobs at St Lawrence College After Shock Closure of Ramsgate Campus

It’s reported, St Lawrence College in Ramsgate, an historic cornerstone of British education for 146 years, has officially entered administration and ceased the majority of its operations as of April 9, 2026.

The sudden collapse of the institution has resulted in the immediate closure of the campus for approximately 500 pupils, marking a sombre end to the school’s long-standing presence in the coastal town.

The financial insolvency has led to the immediate redundancy of 166 staff members. A skeleton crew of 44 employees has been retained solely to facilitate the completion of the academic year for Year 11 and Year 13 students. These pupils, who are currently preparing for GCSE, BTEC, and A-Level examinations, will be the only cohort permitted to remain on-site until the conclusion of the summer term.

Governors at the college described the situation as a “perfect storm” of economic challenges that rendered the school’s future untenable. Key factors cited in the downfall included a steady decline in enrollment numbers and sharply rising operational overheads. However, the school leadership specifically pointed to the 20% VAT levy on private school fees—introduced in January 2025—and the loss of charitable business rate relief as the final pressures that exhausted the college’s financial reserves.

The closure follows the failure of a high-profile rescue mission initiated earlier this year. In February 2026, a proposed merger with Dover College aimed to consolidate the two schools into a single entity known as “St Lawrence Dover College” at the Dover campus. That plan was ultimately derailed by significant local opposition and logistical hurdles, leaving St Lawrence College without a viable path to avoid administration. As the gates close to the younger year groups, the community now faces the loss of one of the region’s most prominent educational landmarks.
