A manipulative Gillingham man who masqueraded as a charming partner before subjecting a young woman to a harrowing ordeal of violence and isolation has been sentenced to more than five years behind bars.
Thomas Bull
Thomas Bull, 32, initially cultivated a facade of normalcy when he began a relationship with the victim in early 2024, using dates and gifts to win her affection. However, this deceptive “honeymoon phase” quickly dissolved into a pattern of obsessive and demanding behaviour, specifically regarding his desire to have a child. But, as Bull tightened his grip on the victim’s life, he began a relentless campaign of digital harassment, constantly messaging and calling her to monitor her movements. This psychological cage soon turned physical. Bull systematically isolated the woman from her support network of friends and began a cycle of regular physical assaults. During one particularly terrifying encounter, he gripped her throat so tightly that she struggled to breathe, eventually forcing her to seek emergency medical treatment at a local hospital.
The abuse escalated further toward the end of the year when Bull forced his way into the woman’s home. Once inside, he engaged in a series of degrading acts, causing extensive damage by urinating on her clothing and furniture. He also stole two watches from the property. The victim finally reached out to the police, leading to Bull’s arrest on December 30, 2024.
Appearing before Maidstone Crown Court, Bull, pleaded guilty to charges including intentional strangulation, common assault, and two counts of coercive and controlling behaviour. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the court sentenced him to four years and four months for these primary offences. When combined with time for a separate incident and a breach of a suspended sentence, Bull was handed a total prison term of five years and three months.
Detective Constable Thomas Bell said:
‘This criminal is a cowardly individual who is quick to use violence and is undoubtedly a danger to women. His victim in contrast has shown immense courage in reporting his appalling conduct and has ensured he is now serving a prison sentence. I would urge any other victims who find themselves in an abusive or violent relationship to speak to a trusted friend or contact us directly. It is by taking these initial steps that we can assist you to escape your ordeal and then bring your tormentor to justice.’
