Rapid Police Response Leads to Charges Following Village Store Break-In

Authorities held three individuals in the early hours of Sunday morning after a burglar alarm at a village shop in Upchurch triggered a swift tactical response.

The automated alert, supplemented by a witness report of an ongoing crime at the premises on The Street, allowed officers to arrive on the scene within minutes of the initial call.

Upon arrival, patrols intercepted a getaway vehicle as the occupants attempted to flee. During the escape attempt, the vehicle struck a wall and several stationary cars. Officers utilized incapacitant spray to safely detain the suspects and prevent further flight. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a cache of stolen goods, including cigarettes, alcohol, and a sum of cash.

The individuals involved now face multiple legal proceedings. One defendant is charged with six counts related to both the burglary and various driving offences, while the others face charges for burglary and handling stolen property. Additionally, one member of the group is accused of assaulting an emergency worker during the arrest. Following an initial court appearance, two of the men have been remanded in custody, while the third was granted conditional bail. The case is scheduled to proceed to Crown Court next month.
