A 49-year-old man from Margate has been sentenced to four years in prison following a conviction for a series of historic sexual offences committed against a child over the span of seven years.
Edward Watson
Edward Watson, formerly of Garrard Avenue, began the abuse in 1990 when he was 13 years old and his victim was significantly younger. The systematic abuse continued for nearly a decade, during which Watson frequently locked the victim in a room to carry out the assaults.
The crimes remained hidden for over thirty years until September 2023, when the victim disclosed the abuse to a trusted relative. This disclosure led to a formal report to Kent Police, prompting an immediate investigation by detectives. Watson was apprehended just three days after the report was made and was subsequently charged with 12 sexual offences, including gross indecency, indecent assault, and unlawful sexual intercourse.
Although Watson denied the allegations, a jury at Canterbury Crown Court found him guilty on all counts following a 10-day trial. During his sentencing on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the court handed down a four-year custodial sentence. In addition to his time in prison, Watson has been placed on the sex offenders register for life, and a permanent restraining order was issued to ensure the ongoing protection of the survivor.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Susan Kingsnorth, said:
‘Historic cases like this demonstrate that it is never too late to seek justice. Kent Police will always listen, we will always investigate, and we will do everything in our power to bring offenders before the courts. I also want to commend the bravery shown by the victim. Coming forward after so many years, recounting traumatic experiences, and supporting a lengthy investigation has ensured that this offender has been held accountable.’
