A coalition including Dover District Council, Veolia, National Highways, and ferry operators has launched the “We Care” campaign to combat severe littering on the A2, a major route to Dover.

In 2024 alone, 23 tonnes of litter were removed from a short stretch of the road.

The six-month initiative features enhanced bins, prominent signage, targeted messaging through ferries and retailers, and a social media campaign, aiming to reduce litter and its associated costs and dangers.

Beyond the aesthetic impact, roadside litter poses significant dangers to motorists and wildlife, and the cost of clearing it, including necessary road closures, places a heavy burden on taxpayers. Clean-up operations on high-speed roads require meticulous planning to minimize disruption and ensure worker safety.

The six-month “We Care” campaign, commencing after a major clean-up in March, will employ a multi-pronged approach.
