A brand-new youth forum is launching in Folkestone & Hythe, giving young people a real voice in how their community develops! This is a fantastic opportunity for local youth to share their ideas and help shape the future of the district.
The forum will meet twice a year, bringing together young people to discuss what matters most to them and explore how to make a real difference. It’s all about boosting democracy and showing everyone just how important local government is!
Local councillors gave the thumbs-up to this new initiative at a meeting last night (19 February), after all the groundwork was laid by Folkestone & Hythe District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee. And guess what? Young people surveyed during the corporate plan consultation were super enthusiastic about the idea, with most saying they’d love to get involved. So, get ready to make your voice heard and be part of something amazing!
Cllr Mike Blakemore, Cabinet Member for Community and Collaboration, said:
“This new initiative will help young people actively inform specific council services and share their views on issues that are important to them. Their voices will influence the future of our work and wonderful district.”
Members of the youth forum will be encouraged to apply for future work experience opportunities at Folkestone & Hythe District Council.
Secondary schools, colleges and youth groups in the district will be contacted about how students can get involved with the project.
Cllr Laura Davison, the chair of the overview and scrutiny committee, added:
“It’s great to see this idea coming to fruition since it was first proposed at full council two years ago.
“I would like to thank council officers for their work to bring this through the overview and scrutiny committee and for members’ engagement to make it happen. All councillors look forward to supporting the forum and hearing that crucial input from our young residents.”
