Maidstone authorities have charged over 40 individuals with shoplifting offences in January, marking an increase compared to the same period last year. The charges follow intensified patrols targeting both the town centre and surrounding rural areas.

During the month, 138 shoplifting incidents were reported, leading to charges against 41 people for multiple offences. One person was charged with six counts of theft after allegedly repeatedly stealing groceries from a local store.

Increased patrols have yielded further results this month.

Earlier this week, officers in Staplehurst stopped a suspicious vehicle and seized suspected stolen power tools and electronics, believed to be taken from a store in Farleigh Hill. Five individuals were initially arrested in connection with the incident. Two teenagers received community resolution orders, requiring them to apologize to the affected store and banning them from the premises for six months. Three men have been released on bail pending further investigation.

Law enforcement officials emphasized the broader impact of shoplifting, noting its effects on consumer prices, job security, and business profitability. They highlighted proactive policing initiatives, increased officer visibility, and targeted patrols as key factors in their efforts to combat shoplifting and ensure public safety.
