Ever dreamed of a career change? These inspiring stories from Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) prove it’s never too late to rewrite your script. Two talented individuals, a former receptionist and an ex-actor, are shining examples of how apprenticeships can unlock hidden potential and launch fulfilling NHS careers.

Georgina’s prescription for Success:

Georgina Brown, a 31-year-old from Herne Bay, is just months away from becoming a fully qualified pharmacy technician. Her journey began in KCHFT’s Sexual Health Service reception, but a chance encounter with the pharmacy team sparked a newfound passion.

“I was fascinated by the work,” Georgina recalls. “It set me on a path I hadn’t even considered.”

Seizing the opportunity, Georgina landed a pre-registration pharmacy technician apprenticeship, a two-year program supported by KCHFT. Now, she’s reaping the rewards of her hands-on experience in community hospitals and beyond.

“It’s been amazing,” she says. “I’ve gained invaluable experience consulting with patients and I’m so grateful for the support from my colleagues. I’m excited to see what the future holds!”

Hekla’s Encore: Finding her voice in Speech Therapy:

Hekla Svavarsdottir, 31, from Canterbury, took a slightly different route. After leading drama and music sessions and working as a teaching assistant, she discovered her true calling: speech and language therapy.

Inspired by the impact of therapists she observed, Hekla joined KCHFT as a therapy assistant and quickly found her niche.

“It felt natural,” she explains. “My performing arts background gave me a unique skillset.”

Now, Hekla is pursuing a four-year speech and language therapy apprenticeship, blending practical experience with academic study.

“Apprenticeships are a fantastic alternative to university,” she says. “You learn on the job and gain certainty about your career path. Everything is falling into place.”

KCHFT: A Hub for Talent Development:

KCHFT’s commitment to apprenticeships is evident. Over 300 colleagues are currently enrolled in 67 different learning programs, including 31 apprenticeship routes. Since 2017, they’ve supported 465 apprentices, with over half securing promotions.

“Apprenticeships bring diverse skills and experiences to our organization,” says Victoria Robinson-Collins, Chief People Officer at KCHFT. “They drive innovation and create rewarding, lifelong careers.”

From entry-level training to master’s degrees, KCHFT is proving that apprenticeships are a win-win for both individuals and the NHS.
