Chief Constable Tim Smith Image: Kent Police

Great news for Kent’s police force! Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott has announced his support for a two-year extension to Chief Constable Tim Smith’s contract. This exciting development means Chief Constable Smith could be leading the force until December 2029!

Mr. Smith’s promotion to Chief Constable in December 2022 followed a rigorous selection process, with his initial contract set to run until 2027. This proposed extension demonstrates confidence in his leadership and commitment to keeping Kent safe.

There’s just one more step: the Kent Police and Crime Panel will review the decision at their meeting today, Tuesday, February 4th. A positive outcome will solidify Mr. Smith’s position at the helm.

To facilitate this extension, Mr. Smith will officially retire from the force on February 28th and then return on April 1st. During this brief period, Deputy Chief Constable Peter Ayling will step in as Temporary Chief Constable, ensuring a seamless transition. Stay tuned for the Panel’s decision!
