Police instructed nine people to leave areas of Sittingbourne at the weekend during a dispersal order to tackle anti social behaviour.
Heightened patrols targeted several areas in and near the town centre, following recent concerns and issues raised by businesses and members of the public.
The dispersal order was in operation between Friday 24 and Sunday 26 January and meant anyone causing a nuisance and instructed to leave could be arrested if they returned to the area. Uniformed officers ensured a visible presence in locations around the High Street, shopping centre, retail park and train station.
The enhanced patrols were in response to previous reports that a small minority of people had been causing upset and a nuisance towards members of the public and shop staff.
Chief Inspector Vanessa Foster said:
‘Whilst I’m pleased to report that there were no serious issues or arrests relating to the dispersal order, immediate action was taken against anyone causing a disturbance. This included officers responding to reports of individuals who were verbally abusing and throwing items at passers-by.
‘It was also encouraging to hear from shop owners and employees, who were really supportive of our increased presence. I would like to reassure them that we will not hesitate to operate future dispersal orders, if necessary.
‘Details of any children who were instructed to leave the area have also been passed to our Child Centred Policing Team and officers will be attending their homes and schools to speak to parents and teachers.’
