Kent residents and businesses are being urged to prepare for a period of strong and gusty winds that could bring significant disruption to the county. A Met Office Yellow warning for wind is in place from 6:00 AM (UTC) on Monday, January 27th, until 6:00 AM (UTC) on Tuesday, January 28th.

The forecasted winds are expected to be particularly strong along the coast, with gusts potentially reaching 60-70 mph. Inland areas are also likely to experience strong winds, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible.

Potential Impacts:

  • Coastal Disruption: Large waves and coastal spray are expected to impact coastal routes, seafronts, and coastal communities.
  • Travel Chaos: Delays are likely across all modes of transport, including road, rail, air, and ferry services.
  • Power Outages: There is a possibility of short-term power outages and disruptions to other essential services.
  • High-Sided Vehicle Difficulties: High-sided vehicles may experience delays on exposed routes and bridges due to strong winds.

Safety Advice:

  • Coastal Caution: If you are near the coast, exercise extreme caution. Be aware of the dangers of large waves, which can sweep people off their feet even from the shore.
  • Cliff Safety: Take extra care when walking near cliffs. Plan your route carefully and keep dogs on a lead.
  • Emergency Preparedness: In case of an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
