More than 100 people from Folkestone gathered at St. John’s Church on Monday, January 20th, to remember and celebrate the life of Tsige Jahna Simmons, who died on 15 December 2024 aged 49.
She was adopted from Ethiopia by Geoff and Jill Simmons in 1975, and was gifted with a passion for music, art, and writing.
Despite facing many challenges, she embraced life with infectious joy was often seen around town in her flamboyant outfits, singing, and sharing laughter.
Tsige’s memorial service began with a warm welcome from Rev. Martin Jewitt and proceeded to the singing of Tsige’s cherished hymn, “Amazing Grace.”
Tributes poured in from close friends and colleagues, including Geoff Simmons, Emma Hakes, Kaya Affleck, and Daniel Bartlett.
Lizzie Emery read Emily Bronte’s poem, “Last Lines,” followed by a Bible reading (Acts 8:26-25) by Carl Emery and Rev. Jewitt offered a reflection on the reading, followed by prayers led by Jill Simmons, and the hymn, “In Christ Alone.”
Geoff Simmons read T.S. Elliot’s poem, “East Coker,” after which prayers of commendation and blessing were offered. The service concluded with a moving rendition of Tsige’s favourite Bob Marley song, “One Love” sung by the whole congregation.
A private funeral was held for the immediate family.
