A distraction burglar has been jailed for stealing from people whose lofts he had offered to survey.
Stuart McAllister targeted elderly and vulnerable victims in Dover and Hythe between April and June 2024. The 61 year old, formerly of Strand Street, Sandwich, offered to review insulation and test for damp in victims’ properties, but, while unaccompanied in their homes, he stole jewellery and other items, some of which he later sold at pawn shops.
Kent Police investigated after victims came forward in June and July 2024 and reported three similar offences. CCTV and other enquiries led to McAllister being identified as the suspect and he was arrested on his houseboat, where officers found stolen jewellery and collectable coins.
In July 2024, he was charged with three counts of burglary, which he admitted at a court hearing in August and was remanded in custody. McAllister was jailed for three years at Canterbury Crown Court on 10 January 2025.
Detective Chief Inspector Keith Taylor said:
‘McAllister presented himself as a reliable and trustworthy tradesman, before stealing items of both monetary and sentimental value from his victims.
‘Criminals of this kind undermine people’s faith in legitimate tradespeople and damage victims’ trust in other people in the community.’
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of McAllister and has yet to come forward should report it through the Kent Police website, quoting ‘Op Chedworth’.
Police Advice
Residents who are approached by people offering work should heed the following advice:
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions about anyone at your door, genuine callers won’t mind. Always remember ‘if in doubt, keep them out’.
• Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home.
• Use the phone number advertised online, as the number on their identity card could be fake. For a utility company, call the customer service department. Close the door while you do this.
• If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
• If you feel threatened or in danger by the presence of the caller, call 999.
