Christmas tree chipping raises £1,114 at Whitstable RNLI Photo: Chris Davey
Despite the frosty morning, Whitstable RNLI volunteers welcomed a steady stream of festive fir trees to their station on Sunday. The 4th annual Christmas tree chipping event proved a resounding success, raising a fantastic £1114 for vital lifeboat services.
Locals braved the cold, arriving with their trees in cars, on roofs, and even carried by hand, eager to support their local lifeboat station. Families like Saskia and her dad Bevis, who are members of Whitstable Yacht Club, recognized the importance of supporting the RNLI.
“It’s great to know our Christmas tree is going to a good cause,” said Bevis. “And it will be turned into biofuel!” explained Alex Bird from A. Bird Ltd, who expertly chipped the trees.
Local Christmas tree suppliers also played a key role by adding tags to their trees, promoting the chipping event. Emma and Morgan Davies, along with their dog Norman, were among the many supporters.
“The lifeboat is crucial to our community,” said Morgan.
Pete Fenton, Joint Chair of Fundraising at Whitstable RNLI, expressed his gratitude:
“Thank you to everyone who braved the cold, our volunteers, and especially A. Bird Ltd. This event wouldn’t be possible without your support.”
The funds raised will directly support the vital work of Whitstable RNLI, whose crews launched to 49 incidents in 2024, covering a vast area along the Kent coast.
