London and the South East of England are bracing for potential significant disruption as a yellow weather warning for snow has been issued by the Met Office for Wednesday, January 8th, 2025.
The warning, in effect from 09:00 UTC to 23:59 UTC, indicates a potential for significant snowfall across parts of the region. Significant snow accumulations are expected, with 2-5 cm possible widely and up to 10 cm over higher ground. This could lead to:
- Power Outages: A small chance of power cuts exists.
- Communication Disruptions: Mobile phone coverage may be affected.
- Travel Chaos: Significant travel delays on roads are highly likely, with the potential for vehicles becoming stranded. Rail and air travel may also face significant delays or cancellations.
- Rural Isolation: Some rural communities, particularly in upland areas, could become cut off.
As temperatures plummet on Wednesday night, ice formation on untreated surfaces is expected.
The Met Office advises residents to:
- Plan Ahead: Check travel routes for delays and road closures. Adjust travel plans if necessary.
- Vehicle Safety:
- Allow extra time for travel.
- Thoroughly check your vehicle before setting off.
- Pack essentials in your car: warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger.
This warning underscores the potential for significant disruption across the region. While not all areas will be affected, residents are urged to be prepared for the possibility of snow and take necessary precautions.
