A groundbreaking new MRI unit has officially opened its doors at the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Buckland Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility marks the final phase of a major NHS investment, designed to significantly boost diagnostic capacity and reduce patient waiting times.

Since 2021, Buckland Hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation, expanding its diagnostic services to include a new CT scanner, a mobile MRI scanner, and upgraded consultation, changing, and waiting areas. The hospital’s existing ultrasound and X-ray services have also been enhanced.

A Game-Changer for Local Patients

Previously, patients in the area had to travel to hospitals in Ashford, Canterbury, or Margate for CT and MRI scans. The new MRI unit at Buckland Hospital will eliminate the need for these lengthy journeys, providing convenient and accessible care for local residents.

Improving Health Outcomes

The CDC has already made a significant impact, with over 117,678 patients receiving diagnostic tests, 60% of whom are from the local community. The new MRI scanner is expected to further enhance patient care and reduce health inequalities in the region.

A Brighter Future for Healthcare

Cara Barlow, CDC Lead, expressed her enthusiasm for the new scanner, stating,

“It will increase capacity and speed up diagnosis, and potentially treatment, for patients. This fantastic local facility will support our aims to improve access and attendances by residents in coastal regions.”

Cathy Wybrow, Deputy Director for Planned Care Improvement, added,

“The combination of all the new scanners and other tests will significantly improve patient care to the local population. We look forward to continuing to review feedback from patients and investing in more patient pathways through this modern facility.”

Tracey Fletcher, East Kent Hospitals Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of the new MRI unit, saying,

“This new facility increases capacity, reducing pressure on hospital sites and improving health outcomes for local patients by providing faster diagnoses.”

The opening of the new MRI unit represents a significant milestone for Buckland Hospital and the surrounding community. By providing cutting-edge diagnostic services, the hospital is committed to delivering high-quality care and improving the health and well-being of its patients.
