Folkestone paid tribute to those lost in war with three poignant Remembrance Services held throughout November.

The first service, a solemn dedication of the Garden of Remembrance, took place on November 3rd. Regimental crosses adorned the garden, creating a poignant memorial for visitors to pay their respects. Interfaith Minister Anita McKenzie led the service, joined by civic leaders, cadets, ex-service personnel, and community members. The Shepway Brass Band’s haunting melodies and a bugler’s performance of the Last Post and Reveille added a profound sense of reverence to the occasion.

On November 10th, the town gathered for the annual Remembrance Parade and Service at the Folkestone War Memorial. A diverse procession, led by a piper and the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, marched through the streets. Reverend Bob Weldon conducted the service, which included a wreath-laying ceremony and the sombre sounds of the Last Post and Reveille. The parade concluded at the Town Hall, where Mayor Cllr Abena Akuffo-Kelly received the salute.

The final service, honouring the Machine Gun Corps, was held on November 11th at the Cheriton Road Cemetery. Organized by the Royal British Legion, the service was led by Father Stephen Brown and Major Richard Oliver. A wreath-laying ceremony and the traditional bugle calls marked the occasion.

All three services were exceptionally well-attended, demonstrating the town’s enduring commitment to honouring its fallen heroes. Mayor Akuffo-Kelly expressed gratitude for the strong turnout saying,

“I am always grateful for the impressive turnout to our town’s Remembrance Parade and this year did not disappoint. Thank you to the veterans, cadets, bands, girl guides, scouts, St. John Ambulance, Police, service personnel including Canadian personnel who came to pay their respects and to honour our fallen heroes.

” We also send a special thanks to our twin town of Etaples, France who sent delegates especially for the day. Thank you to the people of Folkestone for proving that you have not and will never forget the sacrifices made not only in the past but in the present and unfortunately in the future. We stand in solidarity with those who have made and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice, and we will always remember and honour them.”
