Kent Police was called shortly after 8pm on Wednesday 20 November 2024, to a collision involving a pedestrian and a number of vehicles on the coastbound carriageway of the M2 motorway, between junctions 5 and 6.
Patrols and South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and a man in his 50s was confirmed deceased at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.
An investigation into the circumstances is underway. Anyone who saw what happened, including seeing the pedestrian or vehicles prior to the incident, or who may have dashcam footage, should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. Kent police advise the closure will remain in place into the evening for specialist investigation and clear-up work.
Diversion Routes
Eastbound
Road users are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs
- Exit the M2 eastbound at J5 and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto the A249 southbound towards Maidstone.
- Travel southbound on the A249 for approximately 5 miles to reach M20 J7 and take the first exit at the roundabout onto the M20 eastbound.
- Leave the M20 eastbound at J8 and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout, followed by the 1st exit at the next roundabout to join the A20 eastbound towards Lenham.
- Continue on the A20 for approximately 9 miles, passing through Harrietsham and Lenham, to reach the roundabout with the A252 at Charing.
- Take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A252 eastbound towards Challock.
- Remain on the A252 to the next roundabout (with the A251) and take the first exit onto the A251 northbound towards Faversham.
- Continue on the A251 northbound for approximately 6 miles and re-join the M2 at J6.
Westbound
Road users are advised to follow the Solid Square diversion symbol on road signs
- Exit the M2 at junction 6 and take the A251 southbound towards the A252 in Challock.
- At the roundabout junction with the A252 it will exit west towards Charing and the A20 junction there.
- At this junction it will enter the A20 westbound towards Maidstone and Junction 8 of the M20 where it will then enter the M20 and travel London Bound until Junction 7.
- Here it will exit and enter the north bound A249 towards the M2 Junction 5 where it can resume.
