Archbishop of Canterbury resigns amid child abuse scandal

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has stepped down following a damning report that revealed a decades-long cover-up of child abuse within the Church of England.

The report, led by Ian Makin KC, highlighted the institution’s failure to address the horrific crimes of barrister John Smyth QC.

Justin Welby had been facing growing pressure to stand down over his ‘failures’ to alert authorities about John Smyth QC’s abuse of children and young men.
