Two people have been arrested and a number of suspected illegal drugs seized during weekend patrols in Canterbury.
Police in Canterbury were given extra stop and search powers between Friday 11 and Sunday 13 October 2024 as part of a crackdown on disorder in the city centre.
Over 40 searches were conducted by officers patrolling the city, with drugs and a BB gun among the items seized.
On the evening of Friday 11 October, a 23-year-old man from south-east London was stopped and searched in Broad Street. A tube containing a number of deals of cannabis was seized and he was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Later the same evening, an 18-year-old male from Canterbury was stopped and searched and found to be in possession of suspected cocaine and cannabis. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply and a property in the Sturry Road area was subsequently searched. Further drugs, cash, a knife and mobile phones were seized and the teenager has been bailed while an investigation into drug dealing continues.
Three other people stopped during the weekend were found to be in possession of cannabis and were dealt with by way of a community resolution.
Canterbury District Commander Chief Inspector Paul Stoner said:
“We will be proactive in keeping the city centre safe and pursuing those that might pose a risk to others. Every day, our officers head into the city to seek out known offenders, and anyone causing antisocial behaviour, and take action wherever appropriate.”
