Nepalese officers honour Gurkha legacy at Folkestone ceremony

Kent Police officers joined a commemorative ceremony on Sunday, October 6th, to honour the over two-century-long service of Gurkha soldiers to the British Army.

The event was held at the Gurkha Memorial in Sandgate Road, Folkestone.

Superintendent Nick Sparkes, a trustee of the Gurkha Memorial Fund, emphasized the deep-rooted connections between Folkestone and the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

“Generations of military families have settled in the community, not only here but also in Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Maidstone, and Medway.”

“Kent Police is committed to reflecting the communities it serves, and we are proud to have several officers of Nepalese heritage who are excelling and looking forward to future roles within the force.”

Sparkes added that events like the Gurkha memorial ceremony help to strengthen these connections and foster a sense of belonging.

“We were delighted to have been invited to participate.”
