An uninsured driver who seriously injured a police officer in Ashford has been jailed. Barry Rossiter was tracked down and arrested following a detailed investigation into the incident on Coulter Road on January 26, 2024.

The 24-year-old, formerly of Nickley Wood, near Ashford, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced to ten years in prison at Canterbury Crown Court on October 11. He will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole and will serve an extra two years on licence.

Local officers were conducting speed checks in Coulter Road after residents raised concerns about speeding. A PC attempted to stop a speeding silver Vauxhall Vectra, but the car accelerated and struck the officer, causing serious injuries. The vehicle sped off, causing a collision with another car before being found burned out near Shadoxhurst.

Ashford District Commander Chief Inspector Sarah Rivett said:

Detectives spoke to witnesses, reviewed CCTV footage, and proved Rossiter was driving the car. He was arrested on January 31 in Hawkhurst, where he was hiding from police. While in custody, he attempted to bite a detective and was further charged with assault on an emergency worker.

‘Every day, police officers go out to protect the community and respond to local concerns such as the speeding that had been reported in this area.

‘I am always impressed by the bravery and professionalism officers show when faced with people like Rossiter, who think nothing of causing serious harm to those who are doing their job and trying to keep people safe.

‘I would like to thank the investigative team and also praise the officer who was the victim of this callous offence. I, along with everyone in Kent Police, am very happy he is recovering and working towards a full return when possible.’
