Police enquiries into the circumstances of a reported rape in Chatham have established the offence did not take place as reported.

On the evening of Sunday 28 July 2024 Kent Police received a report that a teenage girl had been raped while walking through Luton Recreation Ground near Ash Tree Lane. It carried out a thorough investigation, which included utilising forensic opportunities, speaking to witnesses and a detailed review of CCTV.

Following these enquiries officers have concluded their investigation and are satisfied that the incident was not as first described and are therefore not seeking to identify anyone in connection to the investigation.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Adam Marshall from Kent Police said:

‘The safety of women and girls is of paramount importance to Kent Police and as can be seen from this case we will always respond positively, ensuring that officers carry out detailed enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

‘I want to provide reassurance to the community that we are no longer seeking to talk anyone else in connection with this incident and are satisfied that there is no wider risk to the public.

‘I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who came forward to assist our investigation.’
