At around 11.55pm on Monday 13 May 2024, a police patrol near Lenham attempted to stop a Mercedes that had been reported stolen from Medway. The vehicle failed to stop and it was pursued into Maidstone town centre where it was involved in a collision with another car in St Peter’s Street.

The occupant of the second car was treated for injuries and taken to a London hospital where he remains in a serious condition. A man and two teenage boys were arrested and taken into custody.

An investigation was launched and an 18-year-old man from Gillingham was later charged with causing serious injury by driving dangerously, burglary and theft of car keys, theft of a motor vehicle, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis.

Two boys, aged 17, from Gillingham and Chatham were charged with aggravated vehicle taking. The man and the 17-year-old boy from Chatham were remanded in custody to appear before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 15 May. The third suspect was conditionally bailed to a hearing at Medway Magistrates’ Court on 27 June.
