Police are looking for witnesses to a fire that was deliberately set at a property in Chatham on Thursday morning (20 July).

The fire broke out around 6.00am at the back of a building in Luton Road near Bank Street. It started from a carport and spread to the adjacent property.

A family who lived in the property had to be evacuated and taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Arson

Detective Sergeant Hannah Brown, from Medway CID, said: ‘We are investigating this as a case of arson and we need witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area before 6am, or running away from the scene shortly after the fire began, to contact us.

‘We also ask drivers with dashcam and residents with private CCTV to check their footage for anything that might help us.’

A 35-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed pending further investigation.
