A man who was driving too fast and lost control of his car, resulting in the death of his passenger, has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Shane Howland was driving his VW T-Cross on the A2 near Shepherdswell on 19 May 2021, when he hit a patch of water and skidded off the road, smashing into a tree.
His passenger, 22-year-old Denny Wiltshire, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit found that Howland was driving at more than 78mph, exceeding the 70mph speed limit.
They also calculated that if he had been driving at or below the limit, he would have been able to stop before hitting the tree.
Howland pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for three years at Canterbury Crown Court on 19 July 2023.
Detective Constable Jim Galbraith, who led the investigation, said: ‘This tragic case shows the devastating consequences of speeding.
‘I urge all drivers to respect the speed limit and drive according to the conditions, as it could save your life or someone else’s.
