Fly-tipping could increase

Kent County Council’s plans to cut opening hours and shut down some of the county’s household waste and recycling centres are facing opposition from Dover District Council.

The plans would mean that the centres in Dover and Deal would be closed for two days a week, and that the centre in Richborough near Sandwich would be shut down for good.

Cllr Kevin Mills, Leader of Dover District Council, said: “We’re asking KCC to reconsider these plans, which are harmful both to the environment and cost saving. We understand the pressure on KCC’s budget but they should be trying to protect the key services that people need.

“Residents are worried that these cuts will cause more fly-tipping, and the expenses of cleaning it up, and send the wrong message when districts and boroughs are working hard to encourage recycling and waste reduction.”
