Ruby Chapman during her policing days

Officers in Deal have visited a former police officer who is living in a Kingsdown care home.

Ruby Chapman, who is aged 100, is understood to have been only the second female police officer in Bedfordshire Police Force after joining in the 1940s.

When local officers from Dover’s Community Safety Unit learned that she was staying in a home on their patch, they popped by to see how she was and discuss her experiences in policing.

Acting Inspector Leigh Woolnough, PC Meghan Leslie and PC Lee Champion visited Glendale Lodge in Kingsdown last month.

Trailblazer

Insp Woolnough said: ‘It was lovely to meet Mrs Chapman and hear about her memories of policing. She was a real trailblazer for women in the police force.

‘Policing is a big family and we are always keen to speak to former and retired officers, as they always have experiences we can learn from.’
