Two suspected bike thieves are in custody, arrested just minutes after the incident was reported in Gillingham.

Kent Police received at a report at 11.20pm on Friday 13 January 2023 that unknown males were attempting to take a moped in Castlemaine Avenue, before leaving empty handed.

Officers attended and less than 20 minutes later located the suspects on mopeds. Following a short pursuit two suspects were detained and arrested in Hazlemare Road. Bolt croppers were also found and it is suspected the moped was stolen.

20-year-old man from Chatham was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, interfering with a motor vehicle, driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs and possession of a class B/C drug.

20-year-old man from Gillingham was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, interfering with a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle and failing to stop.

Both remain in custody.
