The stunning gardens and beautiful hanging baskets belonging to council tenants in the district were celebrated at this year’s tenants’ gardening competition.
The annual scheme is run by the Resident Engagement Panel, who organise and judge the entire competition with the support of council officers. This year, 18 tenants entered the four categories.
After a tough judging, which saw all gardens visited and scored, the winners and highly commended were confirmed at an event at Tower House in Canterbury.

Communal gardens:
Winner: Telford Court, Herne Bay (pictured below)
Highly commended: Shalmsford Court, Chartham
Containers, pots and baskets:
Winner: Lydia Luckhurst from Chartham (pictured below)
Highly commended: Michael Thompson from Barham
Cabinet member for housing, Cllr Joe Howes, said: “It’s been another strong year for the gardening competition, with some brilliant displays full of colour and variety, and we would like to say well done to all those who took part.
“Gardens make such an important contribution to local neighbourhoods and we can see the passion that so many of our tenants have.
“Once again our Resident Engagement Panel has pulled out all the stops to make the competition a success. Thank you to all involved for your hard work.”
All winners received £70 in gift vouchers and a plant. Everyone who was highly commended received £50 in gift vouchers and a plant.
The competition was supported through sponsorship from Blue Diamond Garden Centre, Canenco, Gas Call, Grovewell Garden Centre (Canterbury), Meadow Grange Nursery, Mears and Town and Country Cleaners.
Prizes were awarded by the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Cllr Anne Dekker, including plants donated from Blue Diamond Garden Centre and Meadow Grange Nursery.
