Bicycles destined for the scrap heap have been given a new lease of life by Kent Police schools officers as part of a scheme to make students more active.
On Tuesday 28 June 2022, pupils at Holcombe Grammar School and Waterfront UTC in Chatham took ownership of several disused bikes which had undergone repairs and full safety checks.
They were presented to students, along with a cycle lock and helmet, by officers of the North Division Schools Team and staff from Medway Council.
The bikes were supplied by the council and will be available to students aged 11 to 18, to encourage them to be more active and help reduce carbon emissions throughout the towns.
Donations of bikes sought
Schools officer PC Paul Dearing worked alongside the council’s Public Health Active Travel Project, in order to get the bikes back on the road.
Sergeant Glen Rickersey said: ‘This scheme has been really well received and the students have been really pleased to be able to be a part of the initiative. ‘We have a waiting list of students seeking bikes so if anyone or any organisations would be interested in donating any quality unused cycles to the scheme, they can get in touch by emailing cycling@medway.gov.uk.’
