Two people have been sentenced for assaulting a lone woman walking in Chatham.
Zubair Butt and Shyanne Porter repeatedly punched and kicked the victim as she lay on the floor after they ambushed her from behind a wall.
Both offenders were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 12 November 2021.
The assault took place in Luton Road at around 8.20am on 26 February 2019, and the parties were known to each other.
As the victim walked towards the junction with Grove Road, she was set upon by Butt and Porter, who repeatedly struck her as she lay defenceless on the floor. Butt also grabbed her phone and deliberately smashed it on the ground.
As a result of the assault, the victim received numerous head injuries which were treated at a London hospital.
Kent Police officers were quickly dispatched to the scene and reviewed available CCTV from nearby shops.
It was established that Butt and Porter had left the scene in a blue Nissan Micra which belonged to an associate of Butt.
An appeal for witnesses was publicised on the same day and at 3.23pm Porter rang Kent Police’s control room to admit her role in the incident.
She and Butt then voluntarily attended Medway Police Station, on the same afternoon, and both were arrested. Following a review of all available evidence, they were later summoned to answer their respective charges in court.
Butt, 25, from Gillingham, admitted actual bodily harm and criminal damage. He was sentenced to two years.
Porter, 22, from Chatham, admitted actual bodily harm. She was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
Police Constable Sarah Aspey, Kent Police’s investigating officer for the case, said: ‘Both offenders were responsible for a pre-planned and brutal attack which could have easily left the victim with life-changing injuries.
‘I am pleased that we have now been able to secure justice for her.’
