To mark the momentous occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s Accession, there is to be a unique tree planting campaign across the UK known as The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC).
Folkestone & Hythe District Council has committed to being involved in this Platinum Jubilee celebration which will both thank Her Majesty The Queen for her exceptional service and promote the importance of trees in the environment.
The council is working on a number of ways to plant sustainably through which the council and residents can create a legacy in honour of Her Majesty and benefit future generations.
Tree planting in the district
Planting trees successfully depends on planting the right tree in the right place and ensuring that it is cared for after planting so that it reaches maturity.
700 community groups in the district have already been contacted to find out if they would be willing to look after a tree in their local area and some parish councils have already responded positively.
In addition the council is looking at other ways to for the district to mark the Platinum Jubilee by being part of the Queen’s Green Canopy:
- Planting a special tree in each of the district’s main parks
- Tree planting within the council’s own housing and regeneration schemes
- Enabling families to remember loved ones who have died by planting a memorial tree.

Tree planting for The Queen’s Green Canopy will take place during the tree planting season between October and March 2022 and begin again in October 2022 through to the end of the Jubilee year.
