Dog owners are being reminded to keep their pets under control when walking through fields following reports of sheep being attacked in the Canterbury area.
Kent Police received a report of sheep-worrying in the Tonford Lane area, north of Thanington, shortly before 7pm on Monday 17 May 2021. At least two sheep were reported to have been injured.
Officers from the Rural Task Force are investigating the incident and are working to identify two men and a woman seen walking an Alsatian-type dog in the area at the time.
PC Dan Perry said: ‘It’s important that dog owners realise that all breeds, not just the bigger breeds, are capable of chasing and attacking sheep. Even if a dog doesn’t make physical contact, the distress and exhaustion of the chase can cause sheep to die or miscarry their lambs.
‘We are urging all dog owners walking in the countryside to keep their dogs on leads around any livestock. Please follow signs and stick to footpaths, as they are there to protect you and your dog, and to make your walk safe for all.
‘People should report any attacks by dogs on livestock to Kent Police, either via our website, or by calling 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.
